– a pilot plot for sustainable grazing and organizational support to the protection regime;

– development of joint management of rare species of ungulates (saiga antelope);

– development of an integrated fire management in grassland/semi-desert protected areas;

– development of partnerships with local community and regional academic institutions;

– a pilot plot for the protection of birds from power lines

– the largest Russian zapovednik preserving steppes and deserts;

– UNESCO Biosphere Reserve;

– an unique zapovednik that ensures the survival of saiga antelope in Russia;

– an unique range of large-scale restoration of steppe ecosystems after a long period of intensive grazing

Centralno Chernozemny Zapovednik (CCZ)

Kursk region

6 clusters: 5 287 ha; buffer zone of 28 662 ha

Map

– meadow (less dry) steppe of Central Russian forest-steppe;

– one of the last Russian virgin arrays of the upland meadow steppe;

– an unique to the mid-latitude concentration of floristic diversity – more than 80 species of vascular plants per 1 m2, including endemic and relict species of global significance (IUCN Red List and a list of the Berne Convention): Androsace kozo-poljanskii, Cotoneaster alaunicus, Schivereckia podolica, Hyssopus cretaceous, Scrophularia cretacea

– integrated fire management in a small protected areas in the forest-steppe;

– partnerships development with neighboring landusers;

– a pilot plot for developing of the methods for nature conservation in small steppe PAs;

 – work with agricultural landscape as main reserve for the network expansion of steppe PAs;

– a pilot plot for the restoration of the meadow steppe

– the most long-standing (since 1935) and one of the most famous Russian SPA;

– UNESCO Biosphere Reserve;

– the most studied and provided by the scientific justifications Russian SPA;

– historically the main ground where managing steppe ecosystems for their conservation is actually implemented

Orenburgsky Zapovednik (ОZ)

Orenburg region

4 clusters, 21 653 ha + buffer zone of 12 208 ha

Map

– genuine and dry herb-bunchgrass steppes of Southern Urals;

– Important Bird Areas (IBAs);

– the habitat of the species of RF Red Book and IUCN Red List, including the Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis), Great Bustard (Otis tarda tarda) and Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax).

– the basis for future cross-border collaboration for steppe conservation with Kazakhstan;

– a pilot plot for the conservation and restoration of the steppes;

– support for non-traditional forms of territorial protection.

– it was first big Russian steppe zapovednik;

– an unique fully Steppe zapovednik in the country and located in the least protected Russian steppe zone;

– an unique Russian zapovednik preserving the typical steppe ecosystems of the Zavolzhsky -Kazakhstanky steppe province

Daursky zapovednik (DZ)

Zabaikalsky Krai

9 clusters, 45 790 ha + buffer zone of 163 530 ha

Map

– Daurian steppe is one of the Global 200 Ecoregions(WWF Global 200, №95);

– Daurian herb-bunchgrass steppes on the water-parting and valley meadow steppes;

– an unique Russian habitat of the Mongolian gazelle(Procapra gutturosa);

 – IBAs “Lake Torey”;

– a nesting habitat for 66% of the world population of the eastern Great Bustard (Otis tarda dubowskii), 75% of the world population of the Swan Goose (Anser cygnoides), 29% of world population Daurian Crane (Grus vipio), 13% of the Crowned (Grus japonenss) and Black (Grus monacha) Cranes and 37% of the Demoiselle Crane (Anthropoides virgo);

– the main Russian habitat of the Pallas cat (Otocolobus manul) and several other species of the RF Red Book and the IUCN Red List.

– cooperation of different governmental bodies for the conservation of of biological resources and steppe biodiversity;

– a pilot plot for the integration of climate change adaptation in the med-term management planning of protected areas;

– development of an integrated fire management in steppe protected areas;

– development of joint management of rare species of ungulates (dzeren);

– a pilot plot for the protection of birds from power lines

– the most eastern steppe zapovednik in Russia; it preserves many variants of Daurian type steppes not represented in any other federal protected areas;

– an unique example of Russian SPAs actually carried out the practical cross-border cooperation (Russia- Mongolia-China); a part of Dauria International Protected Area;

– UNESCO Biosphere Reserve;

– an unique Russian federal protected areas for the conservation of dzeren;

– the main PA, preserving the Pallas cat in Russia.

(Russian) В рамках Степного проекта ПРООН/ГЭФ/Минприроды России завершена подготовка антологии «Сохранение степных экосистем». Работу проводил Центр охраны дикой природы совместно со многими коллегами – специалистами по вопросам охраны степей.
Заявки на антологию принимаются до 30 декабря 2016 г.

Strategy of the Steppe Eagle conservation in the Russian Federation

Стратегия сохранения степного орла в Российской Федерации

The Strategy is aimed at developing a long-term system of fundamental principles and methods for the species’ conservation and takes into account the ecological processes in steppe ecosystems occurring under the impact of climate change and humans.

(Russian) В Забайкальском крае в с. Нижний Цасучей 19 декабря 2016 г. состоялся суд по уголовному делу о незаконном отлове сокола-балобана двумя гражданами Сирии в окрестностях Даурского заповедника.
