Autumn expedition to study rare animals in Zabaikalie

Big scientific automobile research work was carried out by the researchers of Daursky Nature Biosphere Reserve in order to survey threatened species of South-Eastern Trans-Baikal region on September 11-25, 2012. Eleven districts of Zabaikalsky Krai were covered by the work.


Wildlife refuge “Charysh Steppe” will be established in Altai before the end of 2012

Steppe wildlife refuge “Charysh Steppe” with the square of 5000 ha will appear in the foothills of Altai before the end of 2012.


Study on feather grasses presented at International Botanical Conference


The Eleventh International Conference “Botanical Issues in southern Siberia and Mongolia” was held at the Altai State University (Barnaul, Russia) during August 28-31, 2012. Work on developing regional conservation plans for feather grasses which was completed within the framework of the UNDP/GEF Steppe Project was presented at the meeting by Nikolai Zolotukhin, a researcher from the Black Earth Nature Reserve.


New Saiga News Issue 15


In this issue there brought news and updates on projects, events and media appearances over the last 6 months from all the range states and a diverse array of articles on the conservation and ecology of the saiga antelope, including an analysis of the effectiveness of an environmental education initiative as a conservation tool and a useful summary of saiga taxonomy.

Saiga antelopes can calmly sleep


Saiga antelopes’ nursery in Kalmykia has been at last enclosed with the electric fence at July 24, 2012.


Special small fire-engine will help Daursky nature reserve to extinguish fires


Technical facilities of Daursky nature reserve in extinguishing fires were essentially increased. The UNDP/GEF Steppe Project delivered to it special small fire-engine based on the vehicle UAZ.


Expedition season began in the Dauria International Protected Area


Joint expedition of two nature reserves “Daursky” (Russia) and “Mongol-Daguur” (Mongolia) gone into the Dauria International Protected Area was conducted in the end of June, 2012.


The symposium “Steppes of Northern Eurasia” started in Orenburg, Russia

Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan and Birds Conservation Union of Kazakhstan have chosen Steppe eagle as the bird of 2012 year.


Census of saiga was conducted in Kalmykia


Automobile census of saiga antelope was carried out in Kalmykia on 22-25 October 2011. As a result total number of animals in Kalmykia was estimated as 12870.

Pallas’s cat was fixed by photo camera put on snow leopard on Chikhachev’s Ridge (Altai Republic, Russia) on October 8, 2011.


Federal steppe wildlife refuge “Dzerens’ valley” was created in Russian Dauria

State federal nature wildlife refuge “Dzerens’ valley” with square 213,838 thousands ha was created in Borzya and Zabaikalsky districts of Zabaikalsky krai by the decree of Russian Federation on November 24, 2011.


Census of Sociable lapwing was conducted at migratory sites on Manych lake

Works on clarifying migratory sites of the Sociable lapwing in the Manych river bassin were carried out in September-November 2011 in the frames of the UNDP/GEF Steppe project in Russia.


Created new steppe wildlife refuge in Zabaikalsky Province, Russia

There was created new lanscape wildlife refuge “Semenovsky” in Balei district of Zabaikalsky Province, Russia.


Protecting birds from electrocution on power lines in Dauria steppes


Works on evaluation of medium voltage power lines (6-10 kV) endangered for birds and their equipping with bird protective devices in Zabaikalsky region go on.


Countings of Mongolian gazelle are carried out in Daursky zapovednik


A total 3600-3800 Mongolian gazelles were estimated in Ononsky, Borszinsky, and Zabaikalsky districts of Zabaikalsky krai this Autumn.


The monitoring of dangerous middle voltage power lines in Orenburg Province comes to the end


(Русский) В рамках проекта ПРООН/ГЭФ/Минприроды России «Совершенствование системы и механизмов управления ООПТ в степном биоме России» сотрудниками Института степи УрО РАН и Оренбургского заповедника проведено обследование линий электропередач 6-10 кВ (птицеопасных ЛЭП) на территории Оренбургской области, одного из пилотных регионов Проекта.


The pilotless vehicle was first used for countings of saiga antelopes in Kalmykia


The calving of saiga antelopes occurred in Yashkulsky district of Kalmykia in May 12-16. There were carried out saiga censuses both on ground and by air. For the first time the pilotless vehicle was used for aerial censuses of saiga antelopes. It was shown that females of separate calving groups don’t react to the flight of such vehicle. Used before airplanes AN-24 and helicopters were great anxiety factors for calving groups.


Russian-Chinese conservational collaboration – is it the cause for optimism?

The 6th session of Subcommittee for Collaboration in preservation of environment in the frames of comittee of regular workshops for heads of Russia and China was held at June 1-2, 2011 in Kharbin, administrative center of Kheilundzyan province (North-Eastern China).


“Ubsunurskaya Kotlovina” becomes the transboundary biosphere reserve

The direction of chairman of Russian government about signing of an agreement between Russian and Mongolian governments on creation of transboundary biosphere reserve “Ubsunurskaya Kotlovina” got out on April 21, 2011. The reserve will be created for the conservation of unique nature ecosystems of Ubsu-Nuur lake depression which are included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage, development of ecotourism and environmental education, assistance in bilateral collaboration in wildlife conservation.

(Русский) Проблемы сохранения и восстановления степных экосистем в Оренбургской области и в России в целом обсуждались на заседании Общественной палаты Оренбургской области совместно с фракцией ЛДПР в Законодательном Собрании области и Экологическим Советом при Правительстве Оренбургской области. Заседание состоялось 20 мая 2011 г. при участии Проекта ПРООН/ГЭФ «Совершенствование системы и механизмов управления особо охраняемыми природными территориями в степном биоме России».


The problems of transboundary cooperation in conservation of threatened species are disscussed in Ulaan-Baatar

Today the workshop devoted to transboundary cooperation in conservation of threatened species of Dauria started in Ulaan-Baatar (Mongolia). The workshop will be held on April 25-28. The first part of it is devoted to the conservation of transboundary population of Mongolian gazelle, the second – to the conservation of some bird species – White-naped crane, Great bustard, Swan goose, and Baer’s pochard.

The steppe fires in Khakassia

Almost all Khakassia Republic is enveloped by steppe fires. From April 1 the special fire-prevention regime began. The dry and windy weather promote the beginnings of fires anf its spreading. Every day there occured several tens of steppe fires in the Republic. Almost 400 such fires took place since the beginning of April.


The meeting on conservation of the Saiga antelope and other ungulates took place in Astana


The Secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) together with the Committee for Forestry and Hunting of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan successfully held the workshop on the implementation and coordination of the Saiga antelope (Saiga spp.) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and other CMS instruments for migratory ungulates in Kazakhstan. The workshop took place on the 17 and 18 February 2011in Astana on the premises of the Committee.

New issue of the Steppe Bulletin №31 winter 2011 came out (in Russian language). You can see the results of projects carryied out in the frames of the UNDP/GEF project “Improving the Coverage and Management Efficiency of Protected Areas in the Steppe Biome of Russia” in this number.


The creation of steppe nature monuments is preparing in Orenburg region


Some new steppe protected areas are under creation in Russia in the frames of UNDP/GEF Steppe Project. Two the most representational steppe clusters were chosen in the Orenburg region. There are “Nikolskaya Steppe” in Sol-Iletsk district and “Kuvaiskaya Steppe” in Perevolotsk district.

Альянс, совместно с Казахстанской ассоциацией сохранения биоразнообразия (АСБК), является техническим координатором международного Меморандума о взаимодействии по сохранению сайгака, действующего в рамках Боннской конвенции.
