Steppe diversity: Genuine steppes

Xerophytic and less mesoxerophytic low and high bunch grasses (the characteristic are Stipa zalesskii, S. tirsa, S. pulcherrhima, Helictotrichon desertorum) dominate here but there is the essential participation of mesoxerophytic and even mesophytic motley grasses. Usually there is summer pause in the development (not each year and not deep). Common chernozems are typical.

Xerophytic low bunchgrass (Stipa lessingiana, S. krylovii, Festuca valesiaca, Koeleria cristata, Agropyron pectinatum) dominates in typical variants; the participation of xerophytous dwarf subshrubs is essential (especially of wormwoods, some other Compositae and Chenopodiaceae). The south, dark-chestnut and chestnut chernozems are characteristic (the last are in the steppes of Central Asia).

Genuine feather-grass and (dry) feather-grass  steppes are combined into one more wide type of genuine steppes.
