Steppe diversity: desertified and desert steppes

Desertified and desert steppes are characterized by the domination of xerophytic low bunchgrass (Stipa sareptana, S. glareosa, S. caucasica, S. gobica, Cleistogenes squarrosa are typical) and dwarf subshrubs (primarily Artemisia and Chenopodiaceae species). Plant formation is very rarefied (projective cover is less than 20 %), the most part of biomass plunges into the soil – the plants have larger roots, and the majority of animal species lead underground life. Chestnut and light chestnut soils are characteristic. Desertified steppes (similarly to meadow steppes) form the steppe component of semi deserts (its other components are northern sagebrush and saltwort-sagebrush deserts, alkali meadows, and bushes of mesoxerophytic shrubs). Sometimes the desert steppes are singled out as independent type doesn’t forming the complex with deserts but having gradual transfer to desert (similarly as the difference between meadow steppe in “complex” with forest groves and oak, elm or larch “savanna”).
