A collective monograph reflects results of the study in the frame of the RSF grant № 14-17-00320 «Development of integral indexes to optimize a supply of land structure and modernize nature management in the steppe regions of Russia». A special attention was paid to development of a theoretical base for assessment of agrarian potential of agricultural lands to modernize steppe land use; development of an ecological–hydrological base for nature management optimization in the steppe zone; an analysis of a modern structure of land reserves in the regions within the steppe zone and indexes of their stable development; an assessment of current state and prospects of a specially protected natural territories network development in the steppe zone.

Summary, suggestions and recommendations, which were given in the monograph, aim at establishment of land management preconditions for an ecologically stable spatial development of the steppe regions under economics modernization.

The paper intends for geographers, ecologists, economists, local historians and experts on the field of nature management and state administration.
